What is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal?

Microsuction is regarded as the safest and quickest method of ear wax removal. At The Spectacle Maker, our audiologists are fully qualified in carrying out this simple and effective treatment.

With few limitations, the use of a microscope and finely balanced medical suction device allows us to see directly into the ear canal. No liquids are introduced during microsuction, resulting in a pain-free and comfortable experience that is completed within minutes.

What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax, medically referred to as cerumen, is produced by glands in the ear canal. Its purpose is to trap dust, debris and other small particles and prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the ear drum. In most cases, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear along with any trapped dust or debris without our awareness. The amount of ear wax produced by the ear varies from person to person. A blockage or impaction of ear wax occurs when the wax gets pushed deep within the ear canal. Trapped ear wax can have a negative impact on your hearing. Ear wax is the most common problem presented by patients.

Treating Ear Wax

One of the best techniques for cleaning or removing ear blockages is microsuction. It is widely used, provides no discomfort, and is more effective than water syringing.

Some causes of Ear Wax build-up

Some people just suffer from regularly blocked ears. It can be simply that they over produce ear wax naturally. Other causes of ear wax build-up include:

  • – Narrow ear canals
  • – Hairy ear canals
  • – Dry ear wax
  • – Swimmers ear and Surfers ear (bony growths in the ear canal)
  • – A tight or hard ear canal bend
  • – Overuse of cotton buds in the ear
  • – Wearing hearing aids
  • – Wearing in-ear headphones

Symptoms of an Ear Wax build-up

  • – Earache, as it builds up it can press against the ear canal causing pain
  • – Hearing loss
  • – Itchiness in the ear
  • – Dizziness, a spinning sensation
  • – Tinnitus (buzzing or ringing in the ear)

Benefits of Microsuction

There are many benefits to be had from microsuction ear wax removal. Below are just some of the benefits we would like to highlight:

  • No Ear Wax

The first benefit and maybe the obvious one is that your ears will be free from ear wax. This should ensure you are comfortable and your hearing isn’t restricted.

  • Accurate View

During microsuction ear wax removal a binocular microscope is used by the audiologist. This means there is a clear and accurate view of your ear canal and any obstruction, and the audiologist is able to maintain a constant view on what they are doing. This makes it a far safer and easier procedure than others.

  • No Water

Other ear wax removal methods involve liquids and can be quite messy. However, microsuction is a completely dry procedure with no messy water used or flushed into your ear canal. This has many benefits, including being more comfortable, reduces the chances of infection and also ensures no lasting effects after the procedure.

  • Safe for Perforated Ear Drums or a Mastoid Cavity

As opposed to ear syringing and irrigation, microsuction is a safe procedure for individuals with a perforated Ear Drum, Mastoid Cavity, previous infection or blockage. Microsuction doesn’t push anything into the ear, but rather uses pinpoint accuracy to remove the ear wax.

  • Ear Inspections

An ear inspection or examination can be performed to investigate any perforations or infections with microsuction. The correct treatment can then be undertaken straight away. This is a lot safer than with ear irrigation, where an inspection or examination is not possible first, potentially resulting in more damage being caused when carrying out the procedure.
